Past Events:
6/30 – Jiabun at Eastside’s new Yama Japanese Cuisine
A newly opened restaurant with classy décor, Yama restaurant was the perfect place for a TAPS event. The back of the restaurant features a large room that could host TAPS’s 45-plus guests. Of course, the Jia-Bun proved too attractive that eventually more people showed up than expected and were able to overflow to the seating nearby. Chef Warren Seta executed many Japanese fusion tapas that truly delighted our taste buds. People hopped from table to table, chatted, drank, exchanged business cards, sharing/stealing food of the neighboring table, drank some more, and just had a blast!
6/30 – Volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, part I
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization aimed at building homes for families in need. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 125,000 simple, decent houses.
On June 30, fifteen volunteers from TAPS went to the Habitat for Humanity High Point site in West Seattle to help out for a day. It was a sunny glory day. The group arrived before 9 a.m. and then subdivided into three smaller groups after the safety orientation. By 9:30 a.m., each of us have assigned with a task. Some of us were assigned to the landscaping. Some were assigned with painting. And some were doing the caulking and building the backyard storage cabins. Three houses are being built simultaneously. The future home owners worked with us and the construction staffs, too. The 80+ degree heat did not stop us from getting our hands dirty. The pizza lunch provided by TAPS created a great opportunity for all the volunteers and construction staffs to get acquainted. After lunch, an ice cream truck drove by created another excitement. The work wrapped up before 4 p.m. We then ended this working day. It was a good time. Most importantly, it was for a good cause.
Over half of the volunteers then met up again at YAMA for the TAPS jai-bun event on the same evening for a delicious meal, a good company and another good time. We have certainly built up friendships among us.
Another chance to help out Habitat for Humanity is coming up on July 28th. We will work on a different site in Central Seattle. We look forward to another successful event!!
